The dog is the 11th animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac, and this year we welcomed the Year of the Dog on 15th February with a celebration planned between the Cambridge Asia Association (CABA) and the Cambridge Chinese Business Society (CCBS). The event was held at the Syndicate Room in Judge, and the highlights of the evening were food, friends, and lots of fun!
The party was attended by Judge business school students and their partners, from various nationalities and cultures. The party kicked off with a countdown at 4 o’clock UK time that coincided with the countdown in China happening at 12 o’clock midnight. The wide screen television located at the Syndicate Room allowed the merrymakers to experience the festivities in China the way it is traditionally celebrated.
Of course, what’s a Chinese New Year celebration without food and games? This year, we had “dimsum” (点心), a type of Chinese finger-food dessert, as well as the savoury dishes that are typical of a Chinese dinner. In the spirit of celebration of the Lunar New Year across the Asian cultures, we also had Vietnamese Bánh chưng and Thai Iced milk tea that were earnestly prepared by our MBA students. There were several gaming tables, a common sight at Chinese New Year celebrations, with games such as Mahjong (麻将) and Poker for newbies and experienced players alike.
The capstone celebration of the evening was a traditional yusheng (鱼生) prosperity toss that is observed by Singaporean and Malaysian students across the world. With a multitude of ingredients, and an auspicious Chinese adage that accompanies each, the flavourful dish was prepared in the classic way. However, the yee sang didn’t go according to plan. No sooner had the dish been prepared that ingredients were being tossed all over the room, and onto the ceiling itself. There may still be some ingredients left in the carpets and corners of the Syndicate room, but we all had a good time.
The Chinese New Year is about family and friends gathering together to reminisce the good times, and to celebrate and wish each other auspiciousness for the coming year ahead. We hope that everyone had a fabulous time at the event this year, and we wish you all a very prosperous Year of the Dog 2018!
